2017; One Random Lifer’s year in review

The Dirty Nil @ the Garrick Centre Sept. 2017

Welcome to my year in review. While it’s far from an exhaustive list for everything in the year of music, it’s simply the year from this random lifer. I’ve been lucky enough to not only discover tons of great bands, but also catch them live and even interview a few of them.

Stickaround @ the Handsome Daughter, Aug. 2017

While my passion for music far exceeds my abilities, since joining Punkanormal Activity as a contributor my main goal has been to help shine on a light on Winnipeg’s music scene. With most bands heading to their basements for practice over the long winter, expect a strong return once the hibernation is over. Highlights have included interviews and reviews with Stickaround, Badpants, Mung, the Uglies and Atomic Order. Personal high point was joining Screaming At Traffic in their practice space to record Strange Tubes.

Getting out to shows can be a tricky situation at times, there’s only so many hours in the day. I still managed to get out to more than my fair share of great shows over the past year.

James Renton @ the Handsome Daughter, Aug. 2017

Whether it was the intimate setting at venues like the Cavern and the Handsome Daughter, or the feeling of detachment sitting in the nose bleeds at the Bell MTS Place, I was lucky to catch more than my share of great shows, and add some great setlists to my collection. Here’s a quick list of some of my favorite shows from the year, in no particular order. Greg Rekus and the Inside Job  @ the Handsome Daughter Feb. 2017. The night included an acoustic set from Alex Guidry, along with In 2 Months, the Uglies and Stickaround.

Billy Talent @ Bell MTS Place Feb. 2017. Opening the night was Monster Truck and the Dirty Nil.

Clipwing the Windsor Hotel May 2017. Pouzza Fest kickoff with Worst Days Down, the Uglies, and acoustic sets from Dix(Old Wives) and Seth Anderson. Against Me! the Garrick Centre,  Sept. 2017. The night was opened by the Dirty Nil and Bleached.

The Flatliners the Park Theatre, June 2017. Dine Alone Records Canadian tour included the Dirty Nil and Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs.

Screaming At Traffic @ the Cavern, Sept. 2017. CD release show with Parkview and Suburban Hypocrites.

Of course, no year end music review would be complete without a list of my favorite releases. Do yourself a favor, and add all of these to your collection. In no particular order:

  • Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs
  • Screaming At Traffic S.A.T.
  • Propagandhi Victory Lap
  • Mobina Galore Feeling Disconnected
  • Atomic Order Career Day
  • AntEater Smashed Antholes
  • Badpants Genre Fluid
  • the Flatliners Inviting Light
  • Perception Check the World
  • Layden and the Lion the Lucky Ones

My favorite album of the year; Elsewhere from Worst Days Down.

Thanks for reading my thoughts on the year that was. Hopefully I didn’t miss anyone, but I’ll be on the scene and keep spreading the word.
